THE PROJECT

Yemeni hospitality, framed in arches, wood and gold.

Socotra brings Yemeni cuisine and coffee culture to Clifton, New Jersey. GM Interiors led the restaurant and coffee bar from first concept to opening day: space planning, 3D renderings, finish and furniture selection, custom millwork and on-site coordination of every trade.

The main dining room is organized around a run of scalloped arches, each framing a backlit wall of patterned tile above sage-green channel-tufted banquettes. Wood-clad coffered ceilings with warm cove lighting and crystal chandeliers bring the scale down and keep the room intimate, while gold mashrabiya screens, a nod to traditional Arabian lattice, divide the dining zones without closing them off.

Up front, the Socotra Coffee Bar has an identity of its own: a backlit welcome counter, a glowing relief map of Yemen, latticed wood panels and olive leather seating over a pebble-mosaic floor inlay framed in black marble. Walnut-tone millwork, marble-look tabletops and sculptural wood armchairs tie the two spaces together.
